Welcome to WikiJazz.org
This site exists to provide a place for users to post, edit, and access articles and media content related to the performance, practice, and history of jazz music. I hope that you will contribute your thoughts, your stories, and your written and recorded music to this project.
In speaking with many musicians regarding the thought processes involved in improvising music, it has become clear to me that there are as many ways of thinking about jazz as there are musicians who play it. This is a forum designed to encourage musicians from around the World to share their own unique ways of thinking about communicating with the jazz language. There is no need to cite references, unless you care to do so. If something sounds good and seems to work for you, please share it! Please note that free expression is strongly encouraged, but offensive or inappropriate content will be deleted.
It is my hope that this site will also become a collection of historical information on many people who play or have played the music who are not mentioned in Jazz History books. A major shortcoming of existing books on jazz is the emphasis on documenting only the lives of a small number of major innovators. Jazz is, has been, and will continue to be played by many local musicians who make, have made, or will make significant contributions to the art form. History without the stories of these people is incomplete. Wikijazz.org provides a place to write a more complete history.
The 100th U.S. Congress resolved: "Jazz is hereby designated as a rare and valuable national American treasure to which we should devote our attention, support, and resources to make sure it is preserved, understood and promulgated."
Please...Share your thoughts and your music!
